Senate Committee votes on new EPA Administrator
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will take up a discussion on Acting EPA Administrator, Andrew Wheeler’s, nomination to be the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator. It would go to the full Senate on Tuesday. Wheeler’s nomination is the subject of bipartisan concern over the EPA’s handling of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals, although he is expected to advance to the full Senate.
Congress welcomes President for State of the Union on Tuesday
The rescheduled State of the Union address will happen Tuesday before a joint session on Congress. While it’s unlikely President Donald Trump will cover environmental policy extensively, he is expected to call for bipartisan infrastructure legislation.
House Committees hold hearings on climate change
On Wednesday, both the Energy and Commerce subcommittee and the Natural Resources committee will hold hearings. Both hearings (Energy and Commerce hearing and Natural Resources hearing) will give Democrats a change to talk about how to combat climate change.
Rep. McCollum takes testimony on shutdown
Also on Wednesday, Rep. Betty McCollum holds a hearing to examine whether actions taken during the government shutdown violated appropriations law. The chairwoman of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee previously said she had concerns about administration actions, like tapping into national parks entrance fees.
Senate readies public lands package for debate
A public lands package, S. 47 (116), that includes permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund is set for floor debate this week — honoring a commitment Senate leadership made to a group of senators led by Energy Chairman Lisa Murkowski . It’s a priority for many lawmakers on the Hill, but speedy consideration of the package was blocked by Utah Sen. Mike Lee at the closing of last Congress.

We could see the unveiling of the “Green New Deal” this week by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey.
