Rob Portman (R-Ohio) this week introduced an amendment to a government funding bill that would increase funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) from the current proposed level of $301 million to $320 million.Statement from Healing Our Waters – Great Lakes Director Laura Rubin:“We’ve seen the tremendous impact that the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has had on communities across the region, but serious threats remain. The Peters-Portman amendment’s funding boost is excellent news for the 30 million Americans who depend on the Great Lakes for drinking water, jobs, recreation and a vibrant way of life. This welcome investment in our region acknowledges the work we have left to do, and it points to a future of healthy lakes and healthy lives.”The U.S. House of Representatives has already proposed increasing GLRI funding from $300 million to $320 million.
