Coalition Applauds Canadian Investment in Great Lakes
ANN ARBOR, MICH. (MARCH 24, 2023)—The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition is pleased to see that the Government of Canada is investing in Great Lakes restoration and protection in the form of $420 million CAD (about $306 million USD) over the next ten years.
The announcement comes during a much-anticipated visit between Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and President Biden. Prior to the visit, members of the Great Lakes Task Force sent a bipartisan letter to President Biden, urging him to highlight the importance of the Great Lakes during the meeting. Thank you to the leadership of the signatories to this letter: U.S. Reps. Brian Higgins (D-NY), Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Dave Joyce (R-OH), Jack Bergman (R-MI), Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), and John Moolenaar (R-MI).
“The Great Lakes are critical to both the United States and Canada,” said Laura Rubin, director of the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition. “Great Lakes restoration investments are producing results but additional funding is needed, so this influx is something to celebrate! As with all Great Lakes funding, these investments must also be coupled with strong clean water protections and a commitment to prioritizing communities that have been the hardest hit by pollution and environmental injustice.”
