Great Lakes Senators Need to Speak Up

Its time to gin up support for President Obama’s Great Lakes Initiative in the US Senate. That is why we’ve asked each of the 15 Great Lakes US Senators (Minnesota is still figuring out who will be their second Senator) to tell the Chair and Ranking Members of the Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior to fully fund the $475 million proposal.

It is up to our Great Lakes Senators to make this happen. They need to urge the Chair Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Ranking Member Sen. Lamar Alexander to make sure every last dollar is included in the appropriations bill.

The letter implores Senators to speak to their colleagues about the “unprecented opportunity to address some of the Great Lakes basin’s most pressing needs.” It goes on to remind the Senators that we have a comprehensive, science-based restoration plan that hundreds of stake holders came together to produce.

The following organizations signed the letter: The Alliance for the Great Lakes, Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority,Council of Great Lakes Fishery Agencies,Council of Lake Committees,Council of Great Lakes Industries,Ducks Unlimited Great Lakes/Atlantic Region,Great Lakes Commission, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Great Lakes Metropolitan Chambers Coalition, Great Lakes United, Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, National Parks Conservation Association,Great Lakes Regional Center for the National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, the Nature Conservancy.
