Smartphone app can prevent Great Lakes drownings

Swimming in the Great Lakes can be exciting and refreshing, but it can also be deadly. Great Lakes beaches have currents that are every bit as dangerous as those found in the world’s oceans.

A smartphone app developed by the Great Lakes Commission and Michigan-based Limno-Tech can help beach-goers enjoy Great Lakes beaches safely. The app, called myBeachCast, provides real-time conditions on 1,800 Great Lakes and inland beaches, including any advisories warning of bacterial pollution or dangerous currents. It was developed with funds from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.  Learn more here.
